Midwest Green Mission Commitment 2012

Midwest Green Mission Commitment 2012
We care about our communities and our environment at Whole Foods Market. Fulfilling the promise of this Core Value requires individual commitment and consistent, responsible action from each and every Team Member.
While we are always working on several projects to improve our environmental impacts, during 2012, the Midwest Region is focusing on making significant strides toward our company-wide’s 2015 goal of reducing our energy consumption by 25% per square foot. To achieve our 25% goal, we need everyone to help trim our energy use.
We are asking each Midwest Team Member to commit to the following actions:
·       I will conserve energy by:
ü  Closing cooler, freezer, dock and mechanical room doors tightly every time. Refrigeration is Whole Foods Market’s single largest electricity consumer.
ü  Turning off lights, monitors, and computers and unplugging chargers, devices and appliances when they are not being used…. Consider this fact: plug loads (things left plugged in while not in use) consume roughly 10-15% of commercial electricity use. (
ü  Operating, maintaining, and caring for my equipment and my store or facility. Clean and properly stocked cases operate more efficiently. Well-maintained, carefully-used equipment lasts longer which reduces the need to dispose of and replace it.

·       I will make responsible waste stream decisions through proper sorting of recyclables, compostables and trash every day.

·       I will conserve water through careful planning and execution such as thawing frozen product in the cooler overnight, whenever possible, instead of using running water to achieve the same result.
I commit to learning the goals and initiatives of the Whole Foods Market Green Mission and applying them to my job every day. I also understand that I am empowered and expected to suggest changes to our daily operations when I see opportunities to make Whole Foods Market a more sustainable company.

Please do not print this commitment; we will be gathering e-signatures rather than hardcopies.

World of Food Winner!

Congratulations Camille Straughn of the Huntington Beach WFM! You are the winner of a one year subscription to Saveur magazine. Please look for an email next week so we can get your mailing address.

"If I could go anywhere to enjoy a meal I would have to go to France. I am a culinary school graduate with my degree in baking and pastry so having the opportunity to enjoy a cuisine where there is such a strong emphasis on pastry in both deserts and savory dishes would be amazing. Enjoying meringues, puff pastry, and mousse the traditional way would be absolute heaven, although I am sure I would gain a few pounds in the process!"
-Camille Straughn-WFM Huntington Beach

Stay tuned for another contest soon!
Keep the comments coming.

South RP - Congrats Omar!

Hello Everyone!

It is with great pleasure that I announce

Omar Gaye as the new Regional President of the the South!

Omar started his career in 1992 as a dishwasher and sandwich maker at Fresh Fields Tyson's!   Over the last 20 years, Omar's has progressed from washing dishes to Buyer, Assistant Team Leader, Team Leader, Assistant Store Team Leader, Store Team Leader to Region Vice President in both the Mid Atlantic and South Region.  Omar came to the South 10 years ago and took a risk to become a Store Team Leader during a very difficult time for the region.  Over the last 7 years he's held the position of Regional Vice President for the South Region.  As a leader Omar has a unique ability to inspire our Team Members to go beyond what they feel possible achieving exceptional results.  His passion is infectious and folks want to support him and be the best under his leadership.  The South has grown so much over the last 7 years and with Omar's leadership we can expect a wonderful future with a new standard of excellence.  Please join me in Congratulating Omar on this significant accomplishment, well deserved and we are excited for you to join the WFLN team.    Some interesting facts on Omar; Born in Dakar, Senegal, lived with his parents, 5 sisters and 4 brothers. He resided in many countries such as Italy, France, and Algeria before coming to the United States.  Omar speaks 6 languages!  In 1997, he married a beautiful and understanding woman, Arlette and has a daughter Madina born in 2000.   Omar is a passionate sports fan and likes all the teams that he could watch while living around the world.... Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers, and of course the New York Yankee's!   We won't hold that against him!

We would like to appreciate Ken Hines and David Isinghood for their outstanding preparation, track record of success and presentation during the Town hall and Interview.  Both presenting a strong case to be the RP and made this decision very difficult.  You are great leaders for Whole Foods Market, and your contribution has made a significant difference in our success as a company!  Thank you for opening yourself up to the Team Members in the South Region.

Take Care,
Ken and Eteam!

2 Store Openings in One Day

2 store openings in one day?
Yep, he did it!
Here is a photo journal of a day in the life of David Lannon.

Austin, TX - checking out of hotel at 6:30 AM Central Time.

Headed over to the Bee Cave store at sunrise.
Took a walk around the store, check out this cool banana display...
Mark Dixon got the troops excited before opening the doors.
Is it too early for a beer to celebrate? Cool beer tap area and Pretzel of the Day!
Off to the airport and headed to Orange County via Dallas.
Landed at 3 PM in Orange County and headed to the Laguna Niguel store for more opening day festivities. Check out this fun signage.
Ended the day at 8:30 PM Pacific, beat and ready for a rest. Well, maybe a walk on the beach and then rest. Headed home tomorrow. Thanks to everyone at the Bee Cave store and Laguna Niguel for two great openings in one day!

WPF's new iPhone app

This just in from Joy Stoddard of WPF...

Dear TM Volunteers and interested volunteers!
Whole Planet Foundation’s new Make Change Not Waste app is now live! The app provides Whole Foods Market customers (including you!) with badges and coupons from a catalog of 45 green lifestyle behaviors, such as using a reusable bag, recycling and biking to work. After completing 10 green actions, the customer can unlock one of more than seven coupons from leading green brands, including BlueAvocado, Nature’s Path, Alexia Foods, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, Stonyfield, Frontier Co-op and Organic Valley, or they can choose to donate a percentage of the coupon’s value back to Whole Planet Foundation. The app is available to download from the Apple Store here, so make sure to check it out! Our goal with this app to encourage awareness of the $3.8 billion people living on less than $2 a day, living greener and enjoying great products at the same time.

Genji Bento Bar

Hi Everyone,
I couldn’t wait to share with you a few pictures of our pop up Genji Bento Bar this weekend. We have used an area typically used for merchandising grocery items in bulk, and transformed it to a Bento Bar for this weekend. Costs to set up the bar have been minimal, with demo tables and equipment being used, and a fridge unit borrowed from back of house. The end result looks fantastic, and our customers (and team members) are proving very enthusiastic too. We have high hopes for a good uptake, and the next few days will be a learning curve. The food, as always from Genji, looks amazing. A big thanks to Henry and Yusuke for making this happen in a quick timescale, and to our signamkers Paul and Martin for making some killer signage.

Awesome flowers in Novato, CA store yesterday and a diverse cake at the Franklin store in San Francisco.

A Great Garden Tour!

Last week the Short Pump store hosted a tour for 175 elementary school students…plus teachers and parents…in our Village Community Garden. In addition to learning about the garden, the students got a chance to do hands on activities like planting, seed starting, and even weeding!

Big thanks to Sean and the Backyard Farmer crew for their terrific planning, to our garden team Jim and Madeline, and Kelly N. & Jesse for their help.
