Show Us Your Tats!

July will be Tattoo Month here on the blog.
I know a lot of you out there are sporting some pretty amazing ink so why not share it with the rest of us?
Here is the drill…
Email a short story of your tattoo (a couple sentences) along with your name, title, and store and attach a photo of the tattoo (jpeg file attachements only) – in the subject line simply type “tattoo”.
Photos and stories will be posted througout the month of July.
David Lannon, Executive Vice President of Operations
David always wanted to create his own coat of arms so once he came up with an idea of what he wanted, he worked with Charlotte Davis, the graphic artist in the NE region and the final product is what you see in the photo.

Song of the Week

Black Eyed Peas :: Weekend ft. Esthero

Dublin's 5 Year Anniversary of Friday’s Five After Five!

Ok so it’s a rough estimate but we think we have served at least 450,000 glasses of wine over the past 5 Years here in DUB!
90,000 tickets to the tasting have been sold

1,300 different wines have been featured
The very first tasting had 39 guests…
Since then we’ve had many creative themes created by many TMs, marriage proposals, birthday parties, wedding parties, and who knows what else.

On average we now sell 1,400 wine tickets a week with those PLUs
Which equals 7,000 glasses poured a week
That’s about 364,000 glasses a year if we keep it up!
Some stores in other regions including the stores in England and Scotland do some version of the program

Giveaway - Childhood Food Memory

Heard a fantastic interview with Chef Marcus Samuelsson on NPR the other day and was instantly inspired to start reading his memoir that was just released June 26th. It made me start thinking about childhood food memories so I think a giveaway is in order.

Please comment by adding your most vivid childhood food memory.
What food was it, where were you and why is it near and dear to you?
A winner will be chosen at random, Friday July 6th - the winner will receive a copy of Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelsson.

Please comment by midnight on Thursday, July 5th and make sure to include your name and location.

UNI TMs Making a Difference with Community Service

Written by:
Bonnie Frechette - Marketing Team Leader - University Heights
Something exciting is happening in Providence and several TMs are volunteering to bring it to fruition!
The Rhode Island Foundation received a grant to help upgrade Kennedy Plaza and make it a livelier center of arts and culture,
One of our community partners, Providence City Arts for Youth, (who provided the ceramic bowls for our Empty Bowls event for the Whole Planet Foundation) has worked with youth ages 8 to 14 to create a tile installation in the tunnel by the skating rink. These young kids made the ceramic tiles, adding their own personal touches, and a community of adults have been busy gluing and grouting them to the walls. Once completed, the kids will be transported down to see the finished product for a fun celebration.
Special thanks to Kyle in Seafood and Shauna and Sara in Prep for volunteering this week. The project runs through early next week if anyone else wants to lend a hand!

And save the date – Saturday, August 4th --for the Young Global Artists project! We will be hosting students in City Arts summer program who are working on a special project for the WHOLE PLANET FOUNDATION. We’ll be hosting a sidewalk art sale, with all proceeds to benefit Whole Planet Foundation!

On June 20th, 1975 Jaws changed everything. The film was a massive blockbuster on a scale previously unseen. Followed by Star Wars two years later, Jaws changed the face of movie distribution.
It's also a perfect movie, still arguably Spielberg's best work. The movie ruthlessly, efficiently WORKS, even when you've seen it dozens of times. I rewatched the movie last summer and was as rapt as I had been as a little boy, seeing it for the first time.

There's a new Blu of Jaws coming this summer - how will you call yourself a film fan without that in the collection? Some movies need to be on your shelf. This is one.

30 Vintage Photos of the Empire State Building Under Construction

Took less time to build than many of our stores!

From its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center’s North Tower in 1972, the Empire State Building stood as the tallest building in the world. As of 2012, it is the 15th tallest skyscraper in the world and the fourth tallest free standing structure in the Americas. - Click here to continue reading.

6 Unexpected Ways to Show Off Watermelon

As if to advertise summer itself, supermarkets all over America flaunt pool-size cardboard watermelon bins out front. Sure the fruit they’re heaped with is an emblem of summer picnicking, but how often are those melons good? Picked underripe or stored too long, watermelons can be bland and mealy. But grow your own, or buy from a farmer who knows their fruit, and you end up with watermelons totally deserving of their summer icon status. Click here to continue reading.

22 Kick-Ass Kettle Bell Exercises

Kettlebells are all bells, no whistles. Resembling a mini bowling ball with a handle, kettlebells are greatfor cardio, strength, and flexibility training. Start by picking up the weight of your choice — women usually grab between eight and 16 kg weights, while men go for 16 to 32 kg, though these weights vary depending on the exercises of choice. (No harm in starting low and working your way up!) Reps and sets will depend on intensity and fitness levels, for most of these moves, we recommend aiming for 3-5 sets of 10-30 reps with good form. (We suggest starting things up with a trainer or kettlebell aficionado to make sure everything’s kosher). Ready to rock? Let’s give these kettlebells a swing, snatch, or clean!

Steven Battaglia's Bike Trip

Steven got to the first store on his ride to all 18 PN stores - Bend, Oregon. From there he headed straight north to Vancouver. 600 miles into the trip, he crossed the Cascades at Steven’s Pass and landed at West Vancouver.
All to benefit the WPF and inspire Green Trek!
Steven arrived at Park Royal on Monday evening to a warm Canadian welcome and a big cheque! Inspired by his drive and generosity, we had a fundraiser BBQ which raised $212 for the Whole Planet Foundation in his name. Steven also joined us for our team member appreciation bbq at Ambleside beach before riding to Tsawwassen ferry terminal to continue his journey homeward.

Safe travels Steven!

Taco Truck at Wainscott

Written by: David Duffy, Associate Prepared Foods Coordinator.

Just wanted to say thanks again for helping make taco truck launch at Wainscott a success! From Friday through Sunday, we sold almost 500 tacos and everyone had a blast interacting with customers while serving up some yummy fare.

Special appreciations to store leadership, all the WAI TM’s who helped out, and Sergio Perez, my partner in crime J, for making it all happen!
