Knife Skills: How to Cut Citrus Fruit Into Wedges, Slices, and Suprèmes

This week we're gonna show you how to cut citrus fruits into slices (rounds), wedges, and suprèmes (aka fancy-pants segments). Seems like simple stuff, right? And it is, but doing it right can make a world of difference in how your finished dishes look and taste.
When shopping, look for fruit that seems heavy for its size. Most ripe citrus fruit should give quite a bit when squeezed. If too firm, leave it on the shelf and move on. Citrus fruit will get softer as it sits at home, but don't expect a sour orange to become sweeter. Once it's been picked, it's about as sweet as it's gonna be. Click here for more on seriouseats.com

WFM Supplier Awards

This week, Whole Foods Market revealed the winners of the coveted annual Supplier Awards, Whole Food Market’s highest honors for producer partners that embody our mission and core values.

Some of these suppliers are wonderful partners of WPF, including:
  • WPF’s Supplier Alliance for Microcredit member Alaffia, who will give $50,000 to WPF in 2014
  • Del Monaco Foods, who makes the microcredit client-inspired Turkish Lentil Soup found in Prep Foods, a portion of which goes to Whole Planet Foundation.
  • Alter Eco Foods, who will be partnering with us for this year’s WFM Team Member Volunteer Programs in Peru and Thailand
  • Suja Juice who gives 20¢ per bottle of Mango Fuego juice to WPF
We are so fortunate to work with so many amazing suppliers who help us to alleviate poverty around the globe. They truly are amazing and we are so proud of them.

You can read about these vendors and all the winners of the Supplier Awards here.

Pliny Hunt in La Jolla

Thanks to Jennifer Lahotski in La Jolla for the below post:

Easter Saturday was crazy-fun at Whole Foods Market La Jolla! There was a natural egg coloring kids club in the morning, fresh handcrafted paella being made outside on the patio, and at 3PM, the madness took the sales floor with LAJ’s version of an Easter Egg Hunt for Adults. . . . Pliny Hunt!

Customers and beer geeks were tipped off by the friendly specialty team the week before and showed up for some fun on Saturday afternoon. Some made out like bandits! Enjoy the pictures (and the Pliny!)!

WPF Campaign

Pics from Tuesday’s visit from Global EVP David Lannon.  Alexandra was presented with a new WPF hoodie sweatshirt and a $100 gift card from SERRV, a local business that focuses on fair trade products.

Thank you all so much for making the time for this presentation.  I know how much there is to do on a visit of this nature, and I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support and congratulations.

Thanks everyone!
