André Roman from MHS gets a shout out from Julianna Margulies!

Check out this segment from the Late Night with Seth Meyers, where Julianna Margulies talks about how much her son loves André, "the cheeseman."  And here is what André said about the experience…
"Not many toddlers show a natural interest in tasting cheese, so whenever I come across one that is, I take it as an opportunity to help shape and expand their palate, one that will last until adulthood. And so it has been such a privilege to serve Julianna and her son.  I was completely oblivious of her profession prior to yesterday when the video below was brought to my attention. I am incredibly touched that she shared these experiences and that they’ve made a lasting impact on her son. I certainly would not have changed my customer service had I known she was a celebrity but it just goes to show you what can come out of satisfying, delighting and nourishing every customer."

The Correct Coffee Size Is Small

Written by: Tom Scocca
The wise editor/writer/parodist Jim Windolf published an arch and provocative but also entirely accurate tweet this morning:

This is a fact. The small coffee—also known as a regular coffee—is one of humanity's great inventions: an easily handled, hot, delicious, stimulating serving of a beverage. Large, larger, and largest coffees are grim and tragic. (We have already discussed the related tragedy of the bucket-sized brownish syrup-and-caffeine hot milkshakes sold by "coffee" shops.)

5% Day at Kirby

Thanks to Kendall Smith McDermott, Marketing Team Leader at Kirby for the following post.
Kirby partnered with the American Cancer Society and their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event for our Community Giving Day.

We were able to raise over $8,500 for the fight against cancer! That’s equal to a year and half of free lodging for a cancer patient and their caregiver! This money will go a long way in helping us create a world with less cancer and more birthdays!
ACS sent a quick update on how the day went:
The Community Give Back day was a great opportunity to kick off breast cancer awareness month coming up in October and to educate the community about our programs and services. The American Cancer Society is striving to provide access to care for women in need as they face breast cancer. We promoted our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk to coincide with breast cancer awareness month. The walk is a great opportunity to empower people to fight back against this cancer that has affected so many men and women.

Throughout the day guests were eager to learn more about the organization, the walk, and hear about our volunteer opportunities. We were able to recruit volunteers for our Road to Recovery program that provides free transportation for patients to and from their appointments. And our information we distributed on healthy cooking choices and nutrition for patients going through treatment was a big hit!

The money we raised Saturday will go towards funding our local breast cancer research grants, transportation programs, and providing free lodging for those receiving treatment in Housto

Forget ‘Whole Paycheck’—This Grocery Chain Now Beats Many Competitors’ Prices

View article here on takepart.com

Sarah McColl has written for Yahoo Food, Bon Appetit, and other publications. She's based in Brooklyn.

“Whole Paycheck” may be a thing of the past.
The less-than-loving nickname for Whole Foods has been around for at least a decade, but thanks to some changes at the grocery store it may no longer apply.
If you’re asking incredulously, “On what planet is Whole Foods the cheaper option?” you’re echoing the exact question posed recently by WNYC’s Brian Lehrer. He dug into the matter of dropping prices after Bloomberg News reported that a basket of 97 items cost less at Whole Foods than at Manhattan grocery chains Gristede’s, Fresh Direct, Food Emporium, and D’Agostino.
It’s not magical thinking on the part of shoppers, nor is it only happening in New York.

Giffnock takes the Airstream to concerts

"We took the Airstream to the newly-refurbished bandstand in the central location of the Kelvingrove Park in the West End.  6 evening concerts (sold out at 2,500 people in
attendance at each) and two afternoon comedy sessions (600 tickets sold to each) over two weeks. This means total attendance of 16,200 people!  We handed out 20% off vouchers along with a free bag of Pop Chips, with a significant redemption rate. Thanks to everybody involved in making this a success. We hope to do more festivals with Regular Music so watch this space."

Apple Pay: How it works

Apple Pay

Today at Apple Computer’s iPhone 6 launch event, Whole Foods Market was named by Apple as one of the world’s first retailers to accept touch payments from Apple’s new Apple Pay virtual wallet service via new iPhone 6 phones and the just-announced Apple Watch. Attached and below is our TM Q&A and a press release we are issuing shortly on this exciting news. Please place this TM Q&A in logbooks immediately as customers are likely to start asking about this great new way to pay for their groceries.

What’s the news?
On September 9, Apple Computer announced its next generation iPhone 6 phones and and their new Apple Watch, along with an innovative new mobile payment service called Apple Pay. Whole Foods Market was announced as one of the world’s first retailers to accept Apple Pay payments. Shoppers with iPhone 6 phones or Apple Watches and the Apple Pay service can pay for their items with the touch of a finger at the checkout register, making their shopping experience even faster, easier and more convenient.

What should I say to customers who ask what I think about this news?
We’re really excited for our customers across America to start enjoying touch transactions with iPhone 6 phones as soon as the Apple Pay service launches this Fall. We’re committed to giving you innovative new choices and conveniences, and being able to buy groceries with the simple touch of a finger elevates convenience to a whole new level!

Will all stores be able to accept payments this way?
Yes. All Whole Foods Market stores already accept transactions using Near Field Communications (NFC) technology and are ready to accept payments when the Apple Pay service is activated later this Fall.

Will there be training so we know how to process these new transactions?
Yes. Training sessions will be conducted in all stores before the new iPhones and Apple Pay service is made available to the public.

What do I tell customers who ask about how secure these payments are?
Because a customer’s fingerprint is required to trigger a payment, Apple Pay is an easy, secure and private way to make purchases.

More if needed:
  • The actual credit and debit card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers, and cashiers can’t see the customer’s name, credit card number or card security code. This is intended to prevent the potential for fraud.
  • Transaction data that is stored is kept anonymous, and recent purchase history is kept private – stored only on your device…not on Apple servers. No data is used for Apple marketing.
  • If your iPhone is lost or stolen, you can use Find My iPhone to quickly suspend or remove your cards for the respective device.

Whole Foods Market® among first merchants to integrate with Apple Pay

Whole Foods Market to provide customers with an easy, secure & private way to make grocery purchases at check-out registers
AUSTIN (Sept. 9, 2014) – Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM) today announces its participation with Apple Pay, a new category of service that will transform mobile payments with an easy, secure and private way to make purchases from your iPhone.

“Our customers are going to love the convenience of Apple Pay, which will bring a faster, easier, more secure and private way to make purchases at Whole Foods Market,” said Walter Robb, co-CEO of Whole Foods Market. “We’re committed to providing innovative new choices and conveniences for our customers, and the ability to buy groceries with just a simple touch of a finger elevates convenience to a whole new level.”

With Apple Pay, Whole Foods Market customers will find it easier and faster than ever to grab their morning coffee from our coffee bar, a beer in our tap room after work, or a juice from our juice bars, as well as all of their grocery needs from holiday turkeys to fresh produce and more. By seamlessly integrating Apple designed hardware, software and services, Apple Pay creates a unique and incredibly intuitive and elegant experience for iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch users.

Checkout lanes at all Whole Foods Market stores already accept industry standard Near Field Communication (NFC) payments via pads at store check-out registers. With Apple Pay, Whole Foods Market will accept even more payments using NFC technology.

This fall, Whole Foods Market is excited for Whole Foods Market customers across America to enjoy easy, more secure and private transactions with the launch of Apple Pay.
