365/Additional Coverage - LA Times and More!

The first test for Whole Foods Market Inc.'s new value-oriented stores will be in one of the nation's most competitive grocery landscapes.
The Austin, Texas-based chain said the first of its new 365 by Whole Foods Market stores will open next year in Silver Lake, setting up a potential showdown with rival Trader Joe's.
The former site of a Ralphs was originally intended for a regular Whole Foods Market, but the company decided to renegotiate the lease to expedite the new store's opening. The store will be about 30,000 square feet and may have a wine bar.
Whole Foods operates 24 stores in the Los Angeles area. A downtown Los Angeles store will open in November inside a luxury apartment complex on Grand Avenue.
"Los Angeles is the perfect dense, urban market" to introduce the more convenient store format, co-Chief Executive Walter Robb said in an earnings call Wednesday with analysts.
The 365 stores have been touted as a smaller shopping experience with more competitive prices than the traditional Whole Foods markets. John Mackey, company co-chief executive, said the intent is to expand the company's reach to customers who may have thought Whole Foods prices were too high.
Four other 365 by Whole Foods Market stores will be opened in Santa Monica; Bellevue, Wash.; Houston; and Portland, Ore., in the second half of 2016. The company said it plans to double the number of 365 store openings in 2017.
Analysts say the new stores will have to differentiate themselves to stand out in the already crowded Southern California grocery market.
In March, El Segundo-based Fresh & Easy closed 30 Southland stores. Two weeks ago, newcomer Haagen Inc. said it was laying off employees and cutting worker hours only months after the Pacific Northwest chain arrived on the scene.
"Southern California has a lot of savvy food shoppers who want quality as well as value," said Burt Flickinger III, managing director of consulting firm Strategic Resource Group.
The region is Whole Foods' most important market anywhere in the world, he said. It is also the best market in the nation for Trader Joe's, setting the two rivals up for a face-off.
"It's going to be one of the fiercest food retail battles in decades in natural and organic and healthy high-volume food retail," Flickinger said. "Trader Joe's has been uniquely successful in consistently having success competing against Whole Foods in every single market where they're in the same trading area."
If the new 365 by Whole Foods Market stores can have a narrower assortment that allows shoppers to get in and out faster, it could be successful, said Phil Terpolilli, healthy living analyst at Wedbush Securities.
"I think they see it as a truly differentiated concept that’s more streamlined,” he said.

Silver Lake's Whole Foods Will Actually Be A Cheaper, Budget Store – Laist

Remember the Whole Foods that's set to open in Silver Lake? Well it turns out they're coming for a little less of your paycheck than before.

On Wednesday, the organic, high-end grocer announced it was launching a new budget chain dubbed "365 by Whole Foods Market," and that the Silver Lake location would be the first store. According to The Eastsider, the move not only changes up the market, but will also change the opening date to the first half of next year. It was originally supposed to open even later than that, by the fall of 2016.

"We think the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles is an ideal community to plant our first 365 store flag and bring a modern shopping experience that draws from the best innovations of Whole Foods Market stores and gives them a new expression," said Jeff Turnas, president of the new 365 line, in a statement.
The 365 line, which is named after their house brand, will be cheaper and also offer less variety than the standard Whole Foods Market. It will also compete with the likes of Trader Joe's for the incomes of millennials and hipsters. According to the Seattle Times, more 365 stores will follow in the second-half of 2016 in Santa Monica, Portland, Houston, and Bellevue, Washington.

Whole Foods to open new concept near the Heights – Houston Chronicle

Austin-based Whole Foods plans to open one of its new concept stores —365 by Whole Foods Market — at the northeast corner of Yale and Loop 610 near the popular Garden Oaks/greater Heights neighborhoods.
Whole Foods will lease space for the new concept — the first of its kind in Texas — in a new project to be developed by Houston-based Fidelis Realty Partners called Yale Marketplace.
The 365 store offers a more value-oriented mix of products.
A Fidelis partnership bought the 4-acre parcel last month. The property houses Neff Rental, a construction equipment rental operation.
"We are really excited about the progress we have made with securing real estate in markets where there is high demand for both quality food and value in a convenient format," Jeff Turnas, president of 365 by Whole Foods Market, said in a statement. "Yale Marketplace in Houston, Texas is an ideal location to bring a fresh new shopping experience that draws from Whole Foods Market stores' best innovations and gives them a new expression both in terms of the look and feel of the store and product assortment.

Ideal Field Trip to Allegro

Post info from:Chris Pearson, ASTL at Ideal
We visited Allegro Coffee yesterday and we had a blast! It was absolutely amazing to see what the small but mighty team at Allegro does each and every day to not only support our store and region, but the company as a whole! Their approach and best practices in offering only the highest quality product while simultaneously supporting and giving back to the farmers and growers is impressive to say in the least. Not only did we get to see what roughly 2 million pounds of coffee physically looks like, we were also able to learn about Allegro teas and spices and the complexity that goes into making those great product as well. To top it off, we were also able to partake in a cupping of 3 different kinds of coffee from very different regions of the world! All in all, it was a highly inspirational and educational experience.

I want to take a moment and thank Ed and the whole allegro team for sharing their time, wisdom and passion.

One final note, if you haven’t checked out the WFM Video “the source” highlighting allegro and where they source their coffee, I highly suggest you take 7 minutes out of your day. You can watch it HERE

Oakville's One Day Raspberry Sale Pics

How Does Your Garden Grow?

The following post was taken from an email by Jennifer Grammer in the South Region.

Good Afternoon,

Just wanted to share some good with all….I cannot express how fulfilling it is to come down our entrance each day and see the amazing and beautiful transformation that has taken place where once a crumbling old parking lot stood.

Jacqueline, Sarah, and Amanda have truly brought the dream of the Whole Kids Foundation Education Farm to fruition through all their unyielding dedication and hard work. Store Development  worked hard to create the blank slate for all of this to flourish and Mark Mason built many of the farm’s components with his hands. What a wonderful place to educate children and families about the importance of simple good food.
We are so proud of you guys and proud to call it ours!

The differences in the images below are astonishing and just goes to show the powerful things that can happen when everyone comes together to truly make a difference, not only for us,  but for the lives of so many.

Make sure you take a nice stroll and check it out. It will easily lift your spirits.
